Have you just started learning Spanish, or, on the contrary, have you been trying to learn Spanish for weeks, months, or even years?
Are you still struggling to understand and/or take part in a conversation in Spanish?
Are you wondering where to start in order to speak your first words in a nice and fluent way?
You are not alone!
On my first trip to Spain, I felt completely lost when it came to aligning 3 words in Spanish…
However I had spent the last 2 years learning Spanish at school!
But the way the language was taught, with long lists of vocabulary to memorize, and grammar rules that never seemed to stick in my mind, I just wasn’t able to put all that knowledge into practice, in the “real world”.
What we don’t learn at school, is to PRIORITIZE what we need to learn:
- if you are looking for a job in Spain, focus on BUSINESS LANGUAGE
- if you are going on a vacation in Spain, focus on TRAVEL VOCABULARY you will need
- if you are going to the zoo, well then yes, you might to know how to say ORANGUTAN in Spanish, but otherwise, I don’t think that word will be very useful!
20/80 rule
As a general rule, focus on the 20% of the language that will enable you to get by in 80% of situations!
Did you know that with only 100 words, you can acquire 50% fluency in Spanish?
And that the 1000 most frequent words in Spanish account for 88% of oral speech?
Even in English, we only use 10-20% of words throughout 80-90% of our everyday conversations!
